Potatoes are a staple food in many diets round the world and are available all year-round because they are harvested somewhere every month of the year. These vegetables are a starchy vegetable group which offers a variety of nutrients. They offer a rich source of carbohydrates as well as good source of fiber which comes from their skin.
Potatoes have the following health benefits:
1.The potatoes have phytonutrients which promote health. The phytonutrients found in potatoes include flavonoids carotenoids and caffeic acid. The potatoes also have vitamin C which acts as an antioxidant and prevents as well as delays some types of cell damage.
2.Potatoes have the ability to lower blood pressure because of the fiber that is found in them. They also lower cholesterol by binding with the cholesterol in the blood.
3.Potatoes contain B6 vitamins which are critical in the maintenance of neurological health. The vitamins help to create useful brain chemicals which include dopamine, serotonin as well as norepinephrine.
4. The high level of carbohydrates in potatoes may have advantages like helping maintain proper levels of glucose in the blood, and this is necessary to proper brain functioning.
5.A major health benefit offered from potatoes is helping with digestion because of their high fiber content.
How the potatoes are prepared can influence how healthy they are. When they are fried, this adds calories and gives no nutritional value. The healthiest methods for cooking include boiling, roasting, baking and microwaving.
The best way to eat potatoes is in its whole and unprocessed form and boiling causes less nutrients to get lost. However, potatoes have a bad reputation due to how they are prepared and cooked especially when it comes to peeling them as the process is tedious and tiring.
But, there is an easier way to peel the potatoes in the shortest time possible as outlined below using a knife, pan and water:
1.Take a sharp knife and then carefully run the blade along the middle of the potato, lengthwise. Try slicing only the skin and not the actual potato. Ensure you do not cut too deeply because all you need to do is to simply carve into the top layer of the potato, the skin part.
2. Once you have run the blade, place the potatoes in a pan and pour boiling water from a kettle over them.
3.Turn or switch on your stove and then leave the potatoes to cook until soft.
4. When the potatoes are ready, drain the boiling water out and leave the potatoes in the pan.
5. Run the pan with the potatoes under cold water for a few seconds like ten seconds just to help cool the spuds. Once you do this you will be able to see the cut marks around each of the potatoes.
6.Using your fingers, pull away the skin from the potato.
This technique of peeling potatoes has the following advantages:
>The technique will save you a lot of hassle and hard work
>The potato still stays hot after the technique
>There are no special tools required for peeling only your hands
>With this technique you can peel as many potatoes as required in the shortest possible time
>The nutrients are preserved and are therefore not lost
