On the snowy island of Northern Japan there are some mystical creatures, like you would see in a Pokemon comic or game. Yes, these creatures really exist. The northern island of Japan, called Hokkaido, is a mountainous, snowy and volcanic region, that has some of these animated characters.
The region is home to winter sports, hiking and sightseeing for these colorful characters. There are at least seven unique animals, native or sub-species, found on the island of Hokkaido. Here is a description for each one.
The first one, Ezo Momonga, looks like a snowy white, flying squirrel. The friendly looking, big dark- eyed squirrel looks like a comic book or pokemon character. The animal is legend with its face appearing on the local train station and tickets.
The Shima Enaga or Long-tailed tit, lol, looks like a small white snow cone who is cute and friendly and also looks like the Momonga, could be something out of a comic book.
The Hokkaido red fox is a subspecies of the red fox and is steeped in folklore like other foxes. They have an intelligent and reddish appearance. Such a beautiful contrast to this snowy land.
The Hokkaido red squirrel is another contrasting red on white landscape, that is found only on this island in Japan. It is a subspecies of the red squirrel.
The Ezo naki usagi looks like a rabbit or the family hamster that looks very smart and friendly. The animal was the inspiration for everyone’s favorite Pokemon – Pikachu. The reddish colored and cerebral looking creature is a real charmer.
The Iizuna is a little weasel whose coat turns to white in the winter to match the snowy landscape. The weasel can be seen peering out with its long neck, but is quick to retreat. It is a lot like regular weasels except it prefers cold climates like Siberia, Norway and the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The lanky creature also has a mystic allure and is known to be associated with bad omens and can bring great misfortune.
The last creature is a beautiful white owl named Ezo Fukuro. Ezo is the word for the island of Hokkaido and Fukuro is the Japanese word for owl. This is a snowy white bird and wise looking creature that feeds on some of the other animals in this article. The owls need lots of space in their environment to survive as a species. Owls are some of the most beautiful and unique creatures and when you spot one you always get a great feeling. We need to make room for these birds, so that they are around for a long time.
All the animals above are some of the most beautiful and alluring creatures on the planet, all with unique character. It has been great, getting to see these animals but imagine what they would be like to see in person.
